What is EU AI Act?

The EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689) is the European Union's landmark regulation for artificial intelligence. It establishes a risk-based framework that classifies AI systems into four tiers: unacceptable risk (banned), high-risk (heavy obligations), limited risk (transparency requirements), and minimal risk (voluntary codes).

Organisations deploying or developing AI systems that serve EU citizens must comply regardless of where they are based. High-risk AI systems — including those used in employment, credit scoring, law enforcement, and critical infrastructure — face the strictest requirements including conformity assessments, risk management, data governance, and human oversight.

Non-compliance penalties are severe: up to 35 million euros or 7% of global annual turnover for prohibited practices, and up to 15 million euros or 3% for other violations. The regulation is being enforced in phases from August 2025 through August 2027.

Manual compliance: £50,000+ in consultant fees. Norivo: from £3,000/yr with automated gap analysis and evidence tracking.
